Paper: Watercolor Paper, 140# paper weight (cold press) NOTE: For best results, the paper must be 100% cotton. If you use a cellulose paper such as Canson, you will not be able to handle the loose washes.
Stevie uses 140# Arches cold press paper. Fabriano and Hahnemule are also good papers. Other less expensive papers, but work OK for this technique (all available on Amazon):
Small Spray Bottle (necessary for this technique): Stevie uses a small spray bottle, and a larger spray bottle with a fine mist. These spray bottles are heavily used in the loose painting technique. For this class, if you just have a small spray bottle, that will work. Also bring a hand towel and lots of paper towels! Pencil and white eraser or kneaded eraser (no pink erasers as they leave marks on the watercolor paper) Artists Tape or Masking Tape: You must bring your own tape. Paper will be taped to a support for every project done in class, to keep your paper from buckling. Support: Stevie uses several supports for her paintings. They can be gator board sold at Jerry’s Artarama; or a less expensive option is a sheet of Plastic Corrugated Board by Creatology™, available at Michaels Arts & Crafts. A 20x30 sheet is about $5, and you can cut several smaller boards from that sheet with a craft knife. Then you will tape your paper to this board. Do not buy foam core board as it is not water-resistant. Basic watercolor set with a palette including a yellow, red, orange, blue, green, brown or burnt sienna. Tube paints are preferred, but a good quality pan paint will work, too. If you have any tube colors, bring them, and you’ll learn some fun techniques with them. Questions?
